CCN
After several years of research,
planning and preparation, CCN released the beta version
of the CCN Construction Web Search service in November 2008.
The live version of this much anticipated web search tool,
optimized to search construction websites in South Africa
thereby giving you relevant search results at the click
of a mouse, has now been released as part of version 1 of
the CCN Portal.

UIA WORLD CONGRESS OF ARCHITECTURE DURBAN 2014
IT’S OFFICIAL!!!! Durban
will host the XXV UIA Congress in 2014. This was
announced during the XXIII UIA Congress in Turin
on 6 July 2008.

Durban beat Singapore by a narrow
margin, making it the first African city to host the conference
since Egypt more than 30 years ago. Durban will also host
the International Coastal Engineering Conference midyear
2012. Durban 2014, here we come!

Since 1948, the UIA has organised World
Congresses every three years in which, with an audience
of professionals, students, representatives of the institutional,
political and entrepreneurial world, topics related to
the discipline and current issues are discussed. The XXIV
Congress will take place in Tokyo (Japan) during 2011,
and the XXV Congress will be in Durban (South Africa)
2014.
The presentation took place in Turin
on Sunday 6 July 2008 and the SAIA bid was successful
and will host the theme MultiPliCity to the world in Durban.

Asmal opened a Merit Awards Exhibition arranged by Wits University
at the Fassler Gallery and had the following to say which

MARINDA
SMALBERGER WINS THE COROBRIK ARCHITECTURAL STUDENT AWARD
Marinda Smalberger of the University of the Pretoria
has won the prestigious Corobrik Architectural Student of
the Year Award for 2007. Her entry is Entitled “Portal
to Pretoria, Establishing a Northern Gateway for the City.”
Seven finalists from Universities throughout South Africa
competed for this award at a function held at the ArchAfrica
2008 in Durban on Friday 15 February 2008.

COROBRIK SAIA AWARDS OF MERIT
Twenty two projects received the Corobrik SAIA Awards of Merit at a gala dinner which formed part of ArchAfrica 2008 and took place at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre in Durban on Saturday 16 February 2008.

ARCHAFRICA 2008
ArchAfrica 2008 took place at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre in Durban South Africa and was hosted by the South African Institute of Architects (SAIA) to much success and aplomb.
ArchAfrica 2008 saw the coming together of nearly 300 delegates from three separate architectural events into one gathering of leaders of architects. They were the Africa Union of Architects (AUA) Council meeting, the International Union of Architects (UIA) Council meeting and the South African Institute of Architects (SAIA) Board and Committee meetings.
SAIA PRESIDENTS AWARD
Please note that the deadline for
the SAIA PRESIDENTS AWARD
has been closed. This new award was introduced for the
first time this year for projects of a special nature completed
between 1995 and 2004. The award was open to all persons who
practice architecture in South Africa. Eleven entries
were received and the adjudication will take place over the
next few months. The President has expressed his satisfaction
at the level of interest and would like to thank the members
of the profession for the interest that was shown.

BARTMANN COMPETITION
The competition for the design of the
Sarah Bartmann Centre of Remembrance forms part of the
Sarah Bartmann Project which was initiated by the Department
of Arts and Culture to ensure the return of Sarah Bartmann’s
remains to the land of her birth.
