ELLA STREET HOUSES : CAPE TOWN

For PHILIP STIEKEMA

by TEAM ARCHITECTS

The two houses restore to the streetscape of the Bokaap the quality of neighborhood through their small scale, and their positive relation to the street. The siting of the houses on the mountain is discreet - a quality that seems to be rare in Cape Town at present.

The typology used refers to the small scaled, street facing, middle class house. Within the contained form - each displays a spatial virtuosity that excites the senses and results in a rich experience of architectural relationships that come about as a result of movement through the spaces, by changes of speed of progression and how and where forms are penetrated by void.

The planning is sensible and pragmatic yet allows for a spiritual sense of living. There is a tremendous feeling of connectedness between dweller and place, which makes for a project of merit.
