The
Award for Excellence, conferred every second year, is for
an exceptional achievement in the field of architecture. It
is the most prestigious award in architecture and the highest
accolade that the SAIA and the architectural profession can
confer on a building. The Award for Excellence is sponsored
by Corobrik and as the award is not a competition, more than
one award, or none, may be made.
The
Institute’s Awards programme is run over two years,
starting with Regional Awards during the first year. Projects
completed during 2003 and 2004 were eligible and the process
of national selection started in Bloemfontein in August 2005
when over 30 projects were submitted by the Regional Institutes
for consideration.
The
adjudication took place during May, June and July, with the
national adjudicators visiting the South African Embassy in
Berlin and over thirty projects throughout South Africa for
an in loco inspection. Twenty-nine projects received the SAIA
Award of Merit, from which the recipients of the Award for
Excellence were selected.
Ms Patricia
Emmett, President of the SA Institute of Architects, convened
the panel of adjudicators. Other members of the panel were
Mr Lucas Chauke, a past President of the Association of SA
Quantity Surveyors (ASAQS) and a past member of the SA Council
for the Architectural Profession; Mr Dave Jack, a prominent
architect and past recipient of the Institute’s Gold
Medal; Prof Roger Fisher, architect, critic and academic;
and Mr Peter Du Trevou, Managing Director of Corobrik, who
participated on behalf of the sponsor. |
