The first biennial Convention of the reconstituted South African Institute of Architects took place on Wednesday 21 October 1998 during the ArchAfrica Conference.

ArchAfrica, organised and hosted by the KwaZulu-Natal Institute for Architecture, took place from 19-21 October 1998 at the newly completed International Convention Centre in Durban, and incorporated the 5th Congress and General Assembly of the Africa Union of Architects (AUA).

Apart from several local dignitaries and local architects who participated in the three-day programme, the international keynote speakers were Elena Rossi, Graham Morrison, Greg Burgess, Mick Pearce and Ken Yeang.

The Presidential Banquet, sponsored by PG Glass, took place on Wednesday night, during which the Institute’s Awards were presented. The recipients of the Awards for Excellence were:

SA Breweries Visitors’ Centre, Newlands, Cape by Gabriël Fagan Architects
House Uytenbogaardt, Kommetjie by Uytenbogaardt & Rosendal
Hartleyvale Sports Complex, Observatory, Cape by GAPP and ACG Architects & Development Planners
Johannesburg Athletics Stadium by Arup Associate, London in association with RFB Consulting Architects

Several Awards and Medals were also presented by the AUA at the conclusion of the banquet.

The Conference was preceded by a selection of city tours on Sunday 18 October, and the programme throughout the week was complemented with exhibitions and social and cultural events for companions and delegates.
