CONVENTION
2002
The new SAIA President was inaugurated and several awards
to individuals and projects were announced during the Presidential
gala dinner held at the conclusion of the SAIA Biennial Conference
and Convention which took place in Bloemfontein from 28-30
August 2002.
Mr
Jan Willem Ras, an architect and lecturer, based in Bloemfontein
was unanimously elected President of SAIA for the period 2003-2004
at a meeting of the Board held on Wednesday, 28 August. He
will be in office for a two year period, up to August 2004.
Ms Patricia Emmett, President of the KwaZulu-Natal Institute
for Architecture was elected Vice-President of SAIA for the
same period.
As
one of his last presidential duties, outgoing President Llewellyn
van Wyk presented the Institute’s Gold Medal to John
Rushmere of Port Elizabeth in recognition of his outstanding
contribution to Architecture and the Institute’s Awards
for Excellence. The recipients were:

The
SAIA Biennial Conference and Convention, entitled Architecture
for All, was hosted by the Free State Institute of Architects
and the Department of Architecture of the University of the
Free State. It took place in Bloemfontein from 28-30 August
2002 and was run in parallel with the annual Student Conference.
The
programme of events included the Colour Awards sponsored by
Dulux on Wednesday evening, the Sophia Gray memorial lecture
on Thursday, the Awards Dinner sponsored by the PG Group on
Friday and a guided tour via Jagersfontein, Koffiefontein
and Magersfontein, to Kimberley where the delegates viewed
the new Northern Cape Legislature buildings (under construction)
on Sunday morning.
