CPD
CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
The increasing complexity of construction,
the need for improved performance, ongoing development of materials,
techniques and systems, rapid developments in information technology,
continually changing legislative and practice frameworks and
growing environmental imperatives all point to the need for
life-long learning to maintain, enhance and increase the knowledge
and skills necessary for the proper execution of professional
duties.
The South African Council for the Architectural Profession (SACAP)
has therefore, in terms of Section 13(k) of the Architectural
Profession Act, 2000 (Act 44 of 2000) resolved to introduce
and use Continuing Professional Development as a mechanism to
determine the conditions for renewal of registration of professionals
with effect from January 2007. SACAP has also determined that
professional registration will expire every 5 years and that
compliance with the rules for CPD will be a requirement for
re-registration.
SACAP has approved a “credit” system according to
which 25 CPD credits are to be accumulated over a 5 year cycle.
These are to be earned in 3 different categories, namely
• Category 1, Development Activities
(lectures, courses, seminars, conferences and workshops)
• Category 2, Work-based Activities (architectural
work, lecturing and in-house training and mentoring of candidates)
• Category 3, Individual Activities (membership
of a voluntary association, post-graduate qualification, publication
of articles, self-study, community work, contribution to statutory
and technical committees)
SACAP has given authority to recognised voluntary associations
and accredited educational institutions to offer Category 1
activities. Voluntary associations are also have approval to
validate Category 1 activities offered by other service providers.
The South African Institute of Architects is currently developing
its validation process for Category 1 CPD activities and compiling
a suite of activities (ie lectures, course, seminars, etc) which
it is anticipated will be available to the profession from January
2007. It is intended that full information on the suite of courses
offered will be accessible on this web-site in future.
