In Memory of Arch. (Chief) Olufemi Adetokunbo Majekodunmi
SAIA joins the International Union of Architects (UIA) and the architectural profession across Africa in mourning the passing of Arch. (Chief) Olufemi Adetokunbo Majekodunmi, who died on 5 June 2026 at the age of 86.
Born in London on 1 May 1940 to Moses Majekodunmi and Tomi Agbebi, Femi grew up in Nigeria before returning to the United Kingdom to study architecture at the Glasgow School of Art and Kingston College of Art (now Kingston University), graduating in 1966. After working in Washington, D.C. and with Godwin and Hopwood Architects in Lagos, he founded his own practice in 1973 — today FMA Architects Ltd — which grew into one of Nigeria's foremost architectural firms, with branch offices in Botswana and South Africa.
From 1990 to 1993, he served as the first African President of the International Union of Architects, an important moment in the Union's history. He helped bring African perspectives more prominently to the international stage and championed a more inclusive vision of architectural leadership and professional dialogue. He was a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Architects and a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects.
His notable projects include the Botswana Police College, St. Nicholas Hospital in Lagos, Sterling Tower, the South African High Commission in Abuja, and the Total Head Office in Lagos.
He is survived by his wife, Victoria Majekodunmi, and their four children. SAIA extends its sincere condolences to his family, colleagues and the wider architectural community in Nigeria, across Africa, and around the world. May his memory be a blessing.
